Hello everyone! Welcome to official website for Vulcans. Here you’ll be able to find all the riff-raff and ramblings of our adventures, shows, and other projects. Keep checking back for updates!
If you follow us on Facebook, you’ll notice we’ve been bombarding you with lots of promotional updates. We have the honor of playing World Cafe Live with our new friends Black Horse Motel in Philadelphia (a very big deal for us) on September 7th. Less than a month away (eep!). We would love to see you there! You can buy tickets right now from this website. Just click on our shows tab and buy tickets.
You may have noticed a change in our Facebook, and now website, page name. After much consideration–and in all honesty a mistake when editing the Facebook page–we have decided to become ‘Vulcans’. We could try and explain in detail the reasoning behind the shift, and even claim that the ‘the’ was getting in between us and our fans like Diddy did when he changed his name, but the most straightforward and basic reasoning behind this name change is so we were no longer confused on Spotify and iTunes with these fine gentlemen. The Vulcans beat us to the punch name-wise by a good 38 years, and we don’t want to trample/confuse any fans of the group! For those of you in possession of merchandise with ‘The Vulcans’ as the group name, you now have one of a kind collector’s items, or more possibly incriminating evidence in a lawsuit. Keep it at your own risk!
But in all seriousness, and on a more psychological level, this name change represents the crossroads we as a group find ourselves. We have experienced so much over the past few months, and have so much planned for the future, and with the increased exposure comes the need for breaking from parts of our early development that, while meaningful, must be cast off for the purpose of expanding and growing as a group. We are currently working on re-doing our merchandise and pages to reflect this change, but please bear with us in the meantime, and as always we truly appreciate all the support you have and continue to show us throughout our journey(s) as a band, musicians, and people.
And for goodness sake, it’s just three letters right? Who would have thought an article could be so significant.
And just to prove that Vulcans can’t change direction:
Friends, Romans, Countrypeople:
Our heads are still spinning from the once in a lifetime experience we had at Firefly. We were lucky enough to share the stage and festival with some of the best acts in the country, and many of our personal idols, and that alone is enough to be thankful for, but the amazing reception we received from our performance is one that we will cherish for many days to come! We are now more motivated than ever to be the best musicians we can, and to give you all the performances you deserve!
Throughout our days at Firefly we were lucky enough to be covered by Julia Hatmaker of Penn Live, who documented our set, experiences, and shenanigans as we wandered wide-eyed through the transition we find ourselves in now. You can check out her coverage of our performance here, as well as part 1, part 2, and part 3 of her piece on our festival experience. Thanks to Penn Live for the coverage!
In the run-up to the festival, we were lucky enough to get a spot on XPN’s Philly Local Show, where we got to strut our stuff for listeners around the region. We had a blast performing, and captured the whole thing for your listening pleasure in case you missed it! You can listen to the entire set on SoundCloud here!
Looking forward, we are setting sail on our Philly Songwriters‘ winner’s tour! The first date was unfortunately called due to inclement weather, but while the stage may be dampened, our spirits remain steadfast and true. We are thrilled to be able to take part in this incredible opportunity, as well as share the stage with some of the region’s premier talent. Song collaborations, new friendships, and many adventures await us and we cannot be more excited.
In addition to the tour, we are booking show after show throughout the state, so check our ‘shows‘ page for updates! We’re headed to art collectives, coffee shops, house shows, and even renovated barns, so be sure to catch us while you can!
Finally, we have a very important, top secret, new music-related announcement to make…but not yet! We are still gathering our thoughts, drawing up our plans, and preparing our ground forces, but we promise that you’ll want to be apart of what we’ve got planned.
Lastly (for real this time), as always we want to thank you for the continued support that you all have given us throughout this roller coaster ride. From our first shows at coffee houses to the bright lights of Firefly, your encouragement and support mean the world to us and we couldn’t do it without you! We are incredibly humbled by the reception and opportunities that we have received over the past few months, and we want to share each and every second with you, because we would still be three guys in a living room if it weren’t for you (even though technically we still are most of the time). Please don’t hesitate to come up and talk to us at shows, because we want to meet/thank each and every one of you!
Okay, enough gushing. Back to business.
Lots of big big big news!
1. We had the extremely, majorly, humongous honor of winning this years Philadelphia Songwriters Project contest. Among 11 amazing finalists we were one of four who were declared the winners by a panel of judges and audience votes. In addition we also took home the grand prize – a spot to play at this year’s Firefly Festival in Dover, DE!
This is very exciting for us since it gives us a small spotlight at a major, national festival. We will be playing on June 21st at 6:00PM in the Coffe House Tent. We’ll be keeping everything updated concerning that.
2. Part of the winning package also included spots at lots of festivals in the southeast/southcentral PA region. Please check out updated Shows page for all the details. Hope that you can make it out to see us!
3. In preparation for our busy summer we’ve decided to really dig in and take the next steps as a band. What does that mean? Lots of new merchandise! Working with a few graphic designer friends of ours (you know, those artsy fartsy types) we’ll be rolling out new buttons, stickers, CDs, and T-shirts
4. We’ve been working on new material whenever we can in between all of the excitement too! One of those new tracks, “Before the Dawn,” can be heard over here at Kettle Pot Tracks. We had the pleasure of being invited to spend a lovely afternoon recording in one of the most beautifully acoustic spaces we’ve ever experienced for their “On The Hill” series. Take a moment to catch up with a few of the other fantastic artists they’ve also had there. The full session will be released in the next few months.
5. We continue to plug away editing the tracks for our forthcoming EP/album? “Semaphore.” More details concerning this will be released as they come up. We’re shooting for a late summer release. Cross your fingers for us.
Once again, we look forward to seeing you all this summer. It’s going to be a busy one for us, but a very productive summer as well. Onwards and upwards!
The Vulcans, Brittany Ann, and Anthony da Costa performing their cover of “The Weight” by The Band.
Hello everyone! Just wanted to stop in and say hello (to those who visit the site). We’ve added a SHOWS tab to the page to help keep track of all of our upcoming shows.
As you might know, we finished up recording a new EP in November and are in the process of getting everything ready for it. We’re hoping for a late March release (cross your fingers for us!).
We’re planning on playing even more shows and in even more new places this year. We’ve already had a great start this January with two great shows at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA, and one at the Makespace in good ‘ole Harrisburg, PA!
We had the please of playing with some great musicians. Bellows and Skogen (a duo all the way from Budapest, Hungary!) shared the space with us in Harrisburg. If you ever have a chance, both bands put on an amazing live show.
In Bethlehem, we had the pleasure to play again with our dear friend Brittany Ann who introduced us not only to this new amazing venue, but her good friend and talented musician Anthony da Costa. It was a warm, communal atmosphere just begging for some sing along numbers.
We hope to see many of you soon. Our next show is on February 9th at the M Room in Philadelphia. We haven’t been to Philly in quite a while, so come help us get back in the swing of things!
As you may have seen from Facebook and Twitter, we have just wrapped up recording a new EP over at Studio 7 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After two rigorous weeks of impromptu jam sessions, loud swearing, and plates upon plates of Chinese food, we’ve sent the tracks away to be mixed and mastered. The new project, “Semaphore” is set to be released in early 2013 through digital download (iTunes, Amazon, etc.), Bandcamp, as well as good old fashioned physical copies available at shows or through our website. We put our hearts and souls into the recording and we can’t wait to share it with you!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support us at Kipona! We had a fantastic time, and the weather even held out for us! Truly a miracle. Your support continues to blow us away every single day!
We’re only a few days out! The Vulcans will be playing a special “Table Top Session” at the wonderful Tellus 360 in Lancaster. We will be playing with Lancaster’s own KimberLiana! The event is BYOB, so bring enough to share with everyone! For more details, check out Tellus’ own Facebook event! See you there, and if you’re in the area the night before, you can catch us busking on Prince Street during Lancaster First Friday to promote the show!
